RESTORED BY: JoAnne Wrentham (Portland, OR) ||| FAMILY: Stephen Keller ||| LOCATION: Neponsit, Queens, NY ||| "Once each summer until the late 1970's there was a small mela (fair) in the high meadows (about 10,000 feet asl) at a place called Dain Kund. No townspeople, just paharis, gujars. Hindus and Muslims getting along together. This pahari boy, handicaped with a club foot, has a new flute his father had just bought for him --- which he is obviously pleased with. the picture I just sent from my phone shows the two of them, father and son; I think the one you have is just the boy. Obviously very poor paharis, raggedy clothes, enjoying a day at the fair and splurging on a flute for the boy who, with his handicap, has a pretty dim future. At the end of the 70's the air force grabbed the meadows and fenced them off to build a radar station (some said it was just to give the generals a cool place to hang out in the hot season.) Anyway, the first couple of years after the air force takeover locals could still attend (after all, some of them lived way up there) but I as a foreigner could not and I heard that the fair was discontinued soon after. But googling Dain Kund just now shows that the air force roads have made the place accessible to Indian tourists. The once-pristine environment is probably spoiled by trash left by drunken Punjabis. No mention of an annual fair."

My daughter was about 6 and we were on our way to a family reunion in St. Petersburg. We stopped in Orlando for a few days and went to a magic show. My daughter was enthralled with magic at that age. The magician called her up on stage to help with a trick and a little boy in the audience yelled out, "She's pretty!" I should have known then that it was only the beginning... She's 18 now and just had me in tears when she tried on her prom dress. Happy Easter!"

RESTORED BY: Team Dobson/CFS! ||| FAMILY: Stephen Keller ||| LOCATION: Neponsit, Queens, NY ||| "(c. 1967) In one of the villages where I did my field research. | The despondent old woman was sitting waiting for the Hakim (a doctor in the Unani system, a Muslim medical system somewhat like the Hindu Ayurveda). The doctor appears in another picture, previously restored, looking straight into the camera wearing a turban and wire-rimmed spectacles). As a lower caste patient she sits outside on the door sill. I was there, just inside, because that was where I would wait while my assistant/translater rounded up the people I'd selected from a village census to be interviewed. Side note: at first people were anxious for the prestige of being interviewed by a foreigner but as the populace became aware of how long and tedious the interviews were --- up to ten hours in some cases --- it was harder and harder to corral willing participants. I taught my assistant three North American maxims and would send him off to hunt down the reluctant farmers with one of the following: Frank Buck's (big game hunter), “Bring 'em back alive”, The RCMP's, "We always get our man” and Joe Louis' (heavyweight boxing champion), “He can run but he can't hide”. When he had found someone he would bring him to the doctor's “office” or he would summon me to a charpoi under a tree or once even to a potato field where we scuttled along crablike with one of the respondents as he dug up spuds." Taken outside my house, which like most other "summer houses" built before Indian Independence had a pretentious name: Earlswood. The children playing on the fence in the picture are on the lawn outside my house. They belong to the chowkidar (watchmen/caretaker) who managed the three houses owned by my centenarian landlord and theyv often came to graze some sheep there. Their father, Chumaru, was a really nice man, always cheerful and helpful and unlike many of his counterparts, completely honest. He was in charge minor repairs and looking after the landlord's surrounding fruit orchards. Each year, when fruit was ripening, Chumaru would hire a weird aged Tibetan to sit out at night among the peach, pear and apple trees, banging on a big pot to scare away bears). Landlords were generally absentee and I, speaking Hindi/Punjabi, was the intermediary between foreigner/hippies negotiating with Chumaru and with other chowkidars for other houses around Upper Bakrota. These houses had been summer retreats for rich Punjabi Muslims in pre-partition India and had been grabbed up by Punjabi Hindus and Sikhs in the confusion of Partition. Twenty-five years after Partition some of the houses were derelict and the rest were distinctly no-frills. In those days few of the new owners came there at all and the ones who did would stay only for only the height of the hellish Punjab hot season and would leave as soon as the monsoon broke.

India. There's me and a man named Gullu who was a coolie (yes, as distasteful as that word is to Americans it is the actual word used for porters in India) in Dalhousie. Living three miles from the bazaar (and at 8000 feet above sea level) foreigners hired coolies to schlep stuff up the mountain after having made large and heavy purchases such as tins of kerosene or sacks of rice or wheat flour. Lighter things we carried ourselves. My house is in the background. I lived in Upper Bakrota, outside Dalhousie, for eight seasons, four in that house and four in another. Gullu was a favorite among the foreigners because unlike some of the other coolies he didn't hassle for more than the established price after he'd delivered the stuff. A very tough life but there were people even tougher: Kashmiris who came each season to carry incredible burdens one would think you would need heavy equipment for: tree trunks, cement telephone poles and so on. They didn't do ordinary coolie work; the locals would let them do this easier, mkore lucrtive, work The Kashmiris were dreadfully poor, either barefoot or wearing rope sandals, and would trudge along up the steep path at a snail's pace bent in an inverted L-shape --- with a twelve foot log across their backs, with only a length of rope wrapped around the load and clutched in their fists. *Stephen is a former Peace Corps volunteer, who ironically used to work with flood victims. Of course, you will notice in the picture that the bike was much too big for me. I couldn't even reach the pedals. My dad made giant blocks out of pieces of wood and covered each pedal with one so I could reach the pedals. Before you know it, I was zooming through the house on my new bike in complete ensem (helmet and goggles). My dad passed away when I was 13 so each memory I have of him is precious. RESTORED BY: ||| FAMILY: Wishes to remain anonymous ||| LOCATION: Lindenhurst (Long Island), NY ||| "This photo was taken at My Uncle's place in a very rural section of Short Hills,NJ. They lived on a huge piece of property with acres of woods behind it. Story goes that my Uncle "----" came upon him (the raccoon) as a baby -- his mother dead. My uncle brought him home and they fed him from a bottle. He was very accustomed to being held. He was very friendly and funny to watch. He did have a big outside pen. He remained with them for some time, but if my memory serves (I was only about 10), eventually he showed a desire to be free and they did let him return to the wild. Of course, now I wonder if he adapted to the wild after having been with them. I don't think people knew as much about the potential problems back then. My brother is on the right and two of my cousins in the middle. I believe the fellow on the left was a boyfriend. he raccoon's name was Yogi. There once was a photo of me sitting on a picnic bench with my younger cousin holding Yogi and me looking scared to death! Anyway, so nice to have a photo of Yogi back. "----" just saw this and wanted to know the whole story. So you see, by restoring these photos you are keeping family memories alive and passed on to the next generation. Thanks so much."

RESTORED BY: Becky Dobson (Virginia Beach, VA) ||| FAMILY: Joe & Carey Kloc ||| LOCATION: Old Bridge, NJ ||| "It has been more than a year since Hurricane Sandy devastated our neighborhood and you continue to bring joy to a heartbreaking situation. You may not know that the state of New Jersey has made an offer to buy all the homes in our neighborhood. They plan to demolish the our homes and turn the property into open space. Although this is a voluntary program, most of our neighbors are taking the buyout. Like the photos that you so graciously are restoring it is not possible to put a price on a home and a neighborhood that my family has lived in for over 100 years. Even though New Jersey has received billions of dollars for Hurricane Sandy victims to remediate there homes, we were denied assistance. Call us Old Hippies but we are not going. For the last year we have been building a wall of earth and stone around our home to keep the water from future storms at bay. Because we are on modest fixed income most of the earth, rocks, pavers and shrubbery for the wall has been donated by caring friends, family and neighbors. It’s fitting that you restored the photo of my wife, Carey, stopping to smell the roses at Longwood Gardens over 40 years ago because today we planted three rose bushes on our wall. They were given to us by one of our neighbors that are taking the buyout. We are retired and have plenty of time to remediate our property ourselves, (with a little help from our friends.) Please know that we are fine. We just hit rough patch. Remember that happiness is a journey…….not a destination!!! Also know that what you have done and continue to do is a priceless gift that is appreciated more than you will ever know. Thanks for making my day!!!!! Love, Joe and Carey Kloc"

In season --- between May and September --- they live even higher up and further from Dalhousie than the Dogris, in crude log and mud shelters in the 10,000 foot high meadows. After September it is too cold for the livestock and they trek back to their villages in the plains, six days and sixty miles away, with their buffaloes and cattle, selling milk there until the heat of early summer brings them back to the hills for animal fodder."

This is one of the few pictures of all 4 generations that exists! My grandmother and my hero passed away about 2 years after this in 2007. This picture WAS found in my neighbors backyard about 5 months AFTER the storm. It was in a pile of "brick" pictures and was the lone survivor in the stack. And by neighbor, I mean about 10-12 houses away all the way down the block, under about 3 feet of sand. They found it when they were shoveling the last bit of sand out of their backyard. I am so grateful for what you are all doing. The worst part of Sandy has been losing the pictures and thus the memories that I can't replace. I cherish my photos and the stories that go with them. You did a beautiful job and made my whole day. My mother actually remembers the day she took my sister and I to have our picture taken and was thrilled to see it restored. My mom hired a photographer to take pictures of my sister and me. I am around 6 or 7 years old. A few days before, I scraped up the back of my arms climbing a tree and then, to top it off, I lost a tooth. The photographer had to pose me so my cuts didn’t show and since I couldn’t do anything about my teeth I just put on the biggest smile I could! Thank you so much!” "My son, my husband and I were standing in the basement when the water starting coming through the walls. We grabbed each other’s hands and ran upstairs, slammed the basement door and watched the surge rise five feet in our basement. The electricity went dead, our cell phones lost reception, the entire peninsula went black. We waved flashlights in our windows to our neighbors as the only way to communicate with each other. From our third floor window we watched broken pieces of the seawall, cars and boardwalk tumble past our house and all around us we saw fires spreading. From Katrina, we knew there was a real possibility of us getting trapped in our third floor attic and we prayed we would be able to survive the force of the water if we had to jump out of the windows. The next morning, we opened the basement door and peeked into the dark water that stopped just an inch-and-a-half from our first floor. Everything. Our boiler, water heater, electrical panels, and bookshelves filled with our photo albums were somewhere in the water.” ||| "thank you so much for the downloads! i broke down in tears when i saw this photo. you did a beautiful job and made my whole day. my mother actually remembers the day she took my sister and i to have our picture taken and was thrilled to see it restored."

This new plant, with the existing employees manning the printing presses showed the commitment the new owner had to the newspaper. The men were happy to have their jobs and some security for the future. (The old plant was located in downtown Brooklyn and has been converted to expensive condominiums). The photo was taken in the early 1990s. The men in the photo are pressman. The men in the front row with the light blue shirts are foremen. My husband is wearing a light blue shirt and is to the right of the man in the red turtleneck when you look at the photo. I am grateful to have the photograph back. Not only does it represent family history, it is a piece that represents American labor heritage. Thank-you so much for adopting my photo."

RESTORED BY: Thomasina K. (San Francisco, CA) ||| FAMILY: Stephen Keller ||| LOCATION: Neponsit, Queens, NY ||| "The Gujars...easily the handsomest and most striking people around. The Gujars are a Muslim caste (although there are reputed to be Hindu Gujars in other parts of India) who are cattle and buffalo herders and milk vendors. In season --- between May and September --- they live even higher up and further from Dalhousie than the Dogris, in crude log and mud shelters in the 10,000 foot high meadows. After September it is too cold for the livestock and they trek back to their villages in the plains, six days and sixty miles away, with their buffaloes and cattle, selling milk there until the heat of early summer brings them back to the hills for animal fodder." ||| *Stephen was a volunteer with the Peace Corps, and helped flood victim back in the day.

This is a picture of my mother who passed in 2010. This was taken in the kitchen of our family homestead (her grandson and his family still lives there). This home was flooded by hurricane Sandy (24 inches of water in the first floor living area). After many months of hard work the home is almost back together but they still worry that this may happen again since there are no plans to remediate the area so it does not flood again. Another memory saved."

RESTORED BY: Anonymous ||| FAMILY: Hoong Yee Lee & Seth Krakauer ||| LOCATION: Rockaway Park, Queens, NY ||| "seth and i were together maybe a year or two. we are on a ferry to a bluegrass festival and just so happy to be together." "My son, my husband and I were standing in the basement when the water starting coming through the walls. Everything. Our boiler, water heater, electrical panels, and bookshelves filled with our photo albums were somewhere in the water.”

RESTORED BY: Sef McCullough/Roundhouse (Portland, OR) ||| FAMILY: Stephen Keller ||| LOCATION: Neponsit, Queens, NY In Stephen's words: "The language is Punjabi (the script is called Gurmukhi). It's not a text but a school lesson. In this case it's written on a slab of wood that served as a slate in village schools. The kid has written with charcoal that can be washed off each day. Looks like simple vocabulary but you'd better ask a sikh to be sure. The kid seems pretty proud --- as I recall he was the son of the village carpenter-blacksmith, a fairly low caste in Punjab, and he was the first literate member of his family. Picture was taken in 1967 or '68" Our ultra committed volunteer tracked down a Punjabi translation: "Shyam Singh and his son rise up daily early in the morning and go for harvesting and remain busy through out the day harvesting."
